Brandon Maxwell Spring 2017 Stars Riley Montana & Family in Detroit

Riley Montana Stars in Brandon Maxwell Spring Summer 2017 Campaign

For Brandon Maxwell’s Spring Summer 2017 campaign, the designer stays true to his mantra. Move forward, but never forget where you came from. With a resume highlighted by styling Lady Gaga, the young designer’s strategy seems to be working. Starring in Maxwell’s SS/17 campaign is close friend and Victoria’s Secret model, Riley Montana. You may also recognize her from Kanye West’s ‘Wolves‘ music video. Riley knows very well the history of Brandon Maxwell, having appeared in each one of the designer’s prior runway shows and ad campaigns beginning in SS/16.

Here’s Riley Montana on the runway of Brandon Maxwell Spring Summer 2016.

The designer has made a strong stance for diversity. Maxwell also cast a diverse group of models in last Season’s FW16 campaign including Riley Montana and Maria Borges.

Lensed and styled by the designer himself, the campaign imagery embodies the inner aesthetic of Brandon Maxwell as well as the bond between him and Riley. “I’ve spent so much time with Riley and we talked about our lives and similarities,” Maxwell told Vogue. “I realized that she’s the embodiment of the woman I design for. The woman who, no matter what she’s been through, puts on the clothes with her head held high.”

For the campaign, the friends make things even more personal by traveling to Riley’s hometown of Detroit. Utilizing the beautiful energy of the model’s past, Maxwell captures a series of incredibly intimate, cinematic photos. Joining Montana for the campaign are actual members of her family adding to the rawness of the imagery.

The experience was a reflective one for Riley who reminisces on her climb to the top in the accompanying campaign video. “I am no longer afraid to be me, no longer afraid to share my energy and my past,” she says. “The things I was taught to hide are the reason I am who I am today.” The model’s who’s first name is actually Ebony shares a similar feeling in her recent Vogue interview. “I couldn’t be Ebony — I would tell myself that ‘Riley’ has to be this super-polished and proper person,” she shared. “I was traveling the world for the first time, going here and there and meeting these beautiful people, and I just wasn’t happy. At the end of the day they weren’t even getting to meet the real me.”
