This Angel Is the First Black Model to Rock an Afro on the Victoria’s Secret Runway

Each year, the Victoria’s Secret show brings many firsts, and last night was no exception. While most people were buzzing about Kendall and Gigi getting their wings for the first time, there was also a major beauty first that is breaking the mold.

Twenty-three-year-old Angolan model, Maria Borges, decided to ditch wigs and extensions and rock her short, natural ‘do for her catwalk strut. Although this isn’t Maria’s first year on the runway at VS, it is the first time she has sported natural hair (in the early 2000s supermodel Alek Wek walked with long braids and in 2006 Ajuma Nasenyana showed off a shaved head). In the past, she piled on extensions, just like the other VS models. When you think of angels, you might automatically associate them with bombshell waves and flowing strands, but Maria proved that there is no single definition of an angel.

“I told my agent I wanted to walk in the Victoria’s Secret show with my natural hair,” Maria explained to entertainment news reporter B. Scott. “I was nervous, but I had to do it. When they said ‘yes’ I didn’t expect it, but I was so happy!”

Maria took to her Instagram to express her excitement with the hashtags “#AfroHair” and “MBmakinghistory,” and her fans were very vocal in showing their support.
